Working Class Hero

I was impressed with Green Day's song selection for the American Idol finale. The song and lyrics orginally written by John Lennon will make you think. Click on picture to watch video.

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so crazy you cant follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
When theyve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you cant really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
Keep you doped with religion and sex and tv
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Sarah McLachlan - World on Fire

This song by Sarah McLachlan gets stuck in my head everytime I hear it. I love this video. She writes with so much didatic, depth and passion.
World On Fire
The worlds on fire its more then I can handle
Ill tap into the water try and bring my share
Try to bring more, more then I can handle
Bring it to the table
Bring what I am able
Hearts are worn in these dark ages
Youre not alone in these stories pages
The light has fallen amongst the living and the dying
And Ill try to hold it in
Yeah Ill try to hold it in
I watch the heavens but I find no calling
Something I can do to change whats coming
Stay close to me while the skys falling
I dont wanna be left alone dont wanna be alone
Hearts break hearts mend love still hurts
Visions clash planes crash still theres talk of saving souls
still colds closing in on us
We part the veil on our killer sun
Stray from the straight line on this short run
The more we take the less we become
The fortune of one man means less for some

Liminal Space

Liminal space is the place of inbetweenness, of insecurity. Liminal space is emptiness and nowhere, it is uncertainty and chaos,it is a place of discomfort and unrest.Liminality is a place of dying and rebirth, of metamorphosis, the place where the caterpillar spins its cocoon and disappears from view.Nothing good or creative emerges from business as usual. Much of the work of God is to get people into liminal space and to keep them there long enough so they can learn something essential.
This is the invitation of God, to move
- from comfort to insecurity
- from what we know to what we have yet to discover
- from what we are good at to what we might fail at
- from safety to a place of risk

The Road To The Cross

This was a very uplifting service for me. We discussed the failures of life and the failures of sin. Each person received a candle when they entered the sanctuary. The candles were brought to the cross; we brought our failures to Jesus. What a powerful image.
Sam Sanders

This act in the service was a profound invitation. Mark Shivers, a Ph.D. student at Vanderbilt and a personal friend of mine wrote:
"I am intentional about holistic invitations where our whole mind, heart and body are all involved in conversional acts. I think this connection is important and invitiation at its best gets at this..."
